Breaking the Sound Barrier - 1000 mph in a Car!

The car, Bloodhound, is designed to travel faster than 1,000mph (1,600km/h) " far in excess of the speed of sound and the equivalent of crossing four football pitches every second. The present record of 763mph was set in 1997 by the RAF pilot Andy Green, who will also drive Bloodhound.

The time trial is scheduled for 2011 and will take place in a desert in the Northern Cape of South Africa.

I start off by checking everything is running correctly. the computer, the jet engine. I make sure the fuel is flowing smoothly.

As soon as I let the brakes off, I accelerate to 100-150mph, my speed increasing by about 30mph every second. I put the clutch in and the V12 engine starts to pump hydrogen peroxide into the rocket engine.

At about 350mph, I squeeze down the trigger to start the ignition on the rocket, which boosts my acceleration to about 50mph every second — 400mph, 450mph, 500mph. As I pass through the sound barrier I feel a change in the handling but I won’t hear the sonic boom because, at 800mph, I’m travelling faster than sound.

As I approach 1,000mph I shut down the engines one by one, before a rapid deceleration.

At 600mph I let out my first parachute and at 400mph my second. The braking force is about three times that of gravity. I come to a rest after ten miles. The run has taken a total of 100 seconds.

"She's an unbelievably quick learner," said Ms Rosenberg, who has trained other dogs to appear in TV adverts and pose on photo shoots.

"She can do 250 different things and I used to joke that I would teach her how to pour me a martini. Then for a bet I told a friend I would teach her to read. He promised me a free trip to Mexico if I could do it.

"It took her just six weeks to recognise words and respond to them. And it isn't just my handwriting she understands. My friend printed the words Willow learned off the computer and she reacted to them.

"Well I won the bet and Willow came with me to Mexico."

Willow has her own pet passport and regularly flies transatlantic to visit Ms Rosenberg's husband Gareth Howells, in Guildford, Surrey.

Hot dog record broken

The world record for competitive hot dog eating has been broken in the US.

Joey 'Jaws' Chestnut ate 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes at the annual contest at Coney Island in New York, breaking his old record of 66.

His main rival, Japan's six-time winner Takeru "Tsunami" Kobayashi, ate 64 and a half, reports the Daily Telegraph.

It's thought the two men ate around 19,000 calories between them.

The first such hot dog eating contest was held in 1916, when the winner put away only 13 frankfurters.

The two men have gone gut-to-gut for almost a decade at the annual competition which was this year broadcast live on sports channel ESPN in the US.

Mr Chestnut, who won his third straight title in a row, takes home $20,000 (£12,250) in prize money and the coveted Mustard Belt.

The 25-year-old Californian's other world records include eating 5kg of macaroni and cheese in seven minutes, and 188 jalapeno peppers in 10 minutes.

I had this idea for a while to fill a skate bowl with balloons and try to ride through them. It seemed like the chances of it working were slim. I figured they might make your wheels stop. We finally tried it anyways and as you can see from this video we made of Matt Beach, it worked just fine. The popping sounds are not added in. That is the real audio of balloons popping. it took over 3 hours to blow up nearly 8000 balloons using 2 air compressors to get it full enough. location- Department Of Skateboarding, Portland, OR. All of these are considered to be production cars, and have therefore each beaten the McLaren's record.

Built to brand aerospace technology with their image, Holden of Australia commissioned this radical concept in the 1960s. At that time, Hurricane was one of the most expensive experimental cars, and helped the company sell one million cars from 1969 to 1974.

Inside, Hurricane had an array of extraneous instrumentation to convince any onlookers that the driver car could pilot to moon. Of these, the most notable was a 'retro-gps' system called Pathfinder. It used magnetic signals built within the road to alert the driver of upcoming turns. Other electronic amenities included digital instrumentation, a rear view camera, lifting seats and an automatically opening one piece door.

In conclusion, the Holden Hurricane might be the most exciting car made in Australia. Its motor sport engineering, glorious styling and funky electronics complete a concept that can still impress forty years later.
